THe BBC Good Food Magazine "Olive"

the best food in Glasgow  and thats why the good food magazine choose The Ashoka Charing cross as the only Indian to be recommended for this years issue.

The List

It was the establishments to represent Glasgow when the city won the title of curry capital of the UK in 2006. Owner Cyrus Bavarsad takes pride in ensuring a personal welcome and presides over a huge team of well-drilled waiters in kilts. - Ashoka is a more intimate and opulent space with banquettes, high back chairs and a multitude of decorative objects. The menu has a full range of traditional curries alongside historic and contemporary Punjabi specialities. Stuffed puris include a moist chicken and mushroom option, folded into a crisp rice and lentil pancake, and a huge range of pakoras includes pineapple, apple and banana in crisp, light batter. The Parsee menu, based on rich dishes once reserved for the Moghul courts, shows Iranian and Afghani influences and also a nod to Europe with port and cognac marinades. Among the chef's favourites, chicken abpaz bhoona is cooked with lots of onion and tiger prawns - but the dampohket, a slow-baked lamb dish from Afghanistan sealed with a puri top, is a winning signature dish.

Kingfisher Curry Capital of Britain

The battle for the titles of Curry Capital of Britain  and EthniCity , both sponsored by Kingfisher Indian lager, moved into the judging phase as teams were announced to represent each city.

"Voting was particularly keen this year," said organiser Peter Grove of Menu Magazine. "The sheer numbers indicate the tremendous loyalty generated to customers by ethnic restaurants."

Votes are accepted via the magazine and associated websites as well as directly from the restaurants and there is traditionally great support from regional media. This year the entire Leicester team was chosen by readers of the Leicester Mercury but it was left to a Glasgow restaurant to be the top vote winner. in Charing Cross Glasgow received over 1000 votes from its customers to put it at the head of the Glasgow team.

The team restaurants will now be visited by the 13 independent judges whilst each city council prepares a submission supporting the title bids. In the meantime the public can continue voting for the favourites.

Ashoka at Charing Cross won Glasgow City the curry Capital of Britain.

Eat out Glasgow

Whilst on the subject of curries, I should mention a lovely visit, which we enjoyed to the Ashoka when my sister was home from Canada. Siroosh Bavarsad, Jnr. is doing a great job in this restaurant - great food, delightful staff.
